Overview

Orvion OC-1 is a software model of a world-famous optical compressor. Its goal is to bring the sound and behavior of that design into today's DAWs. Open it and you will notice it feels different from a typical compressor: the compression does not follow a single fixed rule, it follows the movement of the signal itself.

Why the Signal Path Matters

In Orvion, the signal moves through the stages in the same order as the original hardware design. It first passes through an input transformer stage. Next comes the optical gain cell, which controls the compression. Then a tube stage adds warmth and harmonic character. Finally, an output transformer gently softens the top end. Each stage is modeled separately in software.

Just like the hardware, the part of the compressor that listens to the signal hears it after the transformer. So the character the transformer adds also shapes how the compression responds.

Input Transformer

The input transformer works only on the low frequencies. As you turn up Input, the transformer is driven harder and adds more body and weight to the low end. The high frequencies stay clean in this stage.

Compression Character

Orvion's ratio does not stay fixed. The further the signal goes over the threshold, the firmer the compression becomes. Light movements are handled gently, strong peaks are held more tightly. With the ratio set to 1:1, compression is fully off.

Attack gets slightly faster as compression gets deeper. Release works in two stages: it recovers quickly after short peaks and lets go more slowly on long, sustained sounds. When the compressor has been working hard for a while, recovery takes a little longer. This lets the compression breathe and sound natural.

Tube Stage

The tube stage is always in the signal path, even when nothing is being compressed. As compression gets deeper, the tube is driven harder and adds more color. The more you work the compressor, the more its character comes through.

Input, Output and Mix

Input changes the color of the sound by driving the transformer and the compressor harder. Output only sets the level and does not touch the character. With Mix you can blend the compressed sound with the dry signal for parallel compression. The dry signal is time-aligned with the processed signal, so blending does not cause phase problems.

SC Filter

SC Filter applies a high-pass filter, adjustable up to 500 Hz, to the signal the compressor listens to. This keeps strong bass and kick sounds from pushing the whole mix down. The filter only affects detection, not the sound itself.

Where to Use It

On vocals, to even out peaks and keep the voice up front. On bass, to smooth uneven notes and build a steadier low end. On drum and instrument buses, to sit everything in the same frame. On synths and melodic parts, to balance their density. And on the mix bus, to glue the whole track together. Orvion includes ready-made presets in Vocal, Drums, Bass, Synth and Master categories.

Processing Quality

Orvion processes its tube stage with 4x oversampling. Nonlinear processing such as saturation can create unwanted extra tones in the high frequencies. Oversampling reduces these tones and helps keep the sound clean.

Questions

Before you buy

Can I try it before buying?+
Every plugin comes with a 14-day free trial — fully featured, no card needed.
How many computers can I use it on?+
A single licence activates on 3 devices.
Do I need to be online?+
No. After activation the plugin keeps working offline for 90 days before it checks in again.
Can I start a new trial with a different email?+
No. The trial is tied to your device, so signing up with a different email does not reset it. Each computer gets one free trial.
I bought with a different email than my trial — is that a problem?+
Not at all. The licence lives on the account that made the purchase, so simply sign in with the email you purchased with and the plugin activates.
